Abstract submission

Background:

The bone marrow adipose tissue (BMA) represets almost 70% of bone marrow cavity and it derives from skeletal stem cells that in addition to be able to differentiate into adipocytes, can differentiate into osteoblastic bone forming cells. A number of studies thus suggest a close relationship between energy metabolism, bone marrow adipocytes and bone formation by osteoblastic cells. Moreover, several epidemiological and clinical studies have demonstrated that bone fracture is an important complication of both type I and type II diabetes. Unfortunately, classical risk factors of age-related osteoporosis that predict osteoporotic fractures do not apply to diabetic patients and thus there is a need for more understanding of the pathophysiology of bone fracture and ”diabetic bone disease”. Further, increased BMA has also been shown in cancer patients after chemotherapy treatment interfering with blood production in bone marrow cavity. Thus, these areas of research increase attention of several scientists all over the world.
